This book covers the basic routine tasks of system admins, whether they are in charge of Unix, Windows NT/2000, or even MacOS. It shows you how to perform various tasks, from walking through the filesystem, using the File::Find module to parsing information from various log files(both system generated and ones generated by commercial programs).I found the tutorials at the end of the book to be very informative, as I have never really worked with most of them, with the exception of SQL.

In all, David Blank-Edelman did a very good job of writing this book, balancing the subject matter between Unix and Windows based administration. He provides additional references and links at the end of each chapter. He even mentions the name of a certain perl and regex hacker that we all know, primarily to thank him for a snippet of code that he uses to describe the collection of user account information into a queue written in an XML format.
This book is definitely useful to have around, and makes for a good reference.
