Maybe using Win32::OLE is an option for you. See Using Win32::OLE and Excel - Tips and Tricks how to use it. However it requires you being in an Windows-environment and having Excel installed.

    That is the problem. I am restricted to working in linux environment. Now what??
        ok thnaks i vl go thru it... FYI: http://search.cpan.org/dist/Spreadsheet-ParseExcel/lib/Spreadsheet/ParseExcel/SaveParser.pm Scroll down to "Known Problems". Parse Excel says what i quoted earlier.
        not useful for me... :(
