No matter what you do, learn about taint mode and how and why to untaint user input, especially since you are going to be using it to look for file names. It is impossible to overemphasize the importance of doing so! Trust me, you'll be glad you did when you get out in the real world. :)
You must always remember that the primary goal is to drain the swamp even when you are hip-deep in alligators.
