Well someone was bound to prey on the Perl Journal name once it was declared dead by Sys-Admin, frankly I'm surprised it took as long as this (though I'm cynical by nature).
Unless the Perl Review is supported in the same way that this site is supported (by the users I mean) then this sort of thing will have a larger lifespan. Personally, I'd say leave the site as is, perhaps sending feedback on the way to do things properly and point the site owners to this site. Positive feedback like that may encourage them to improve their content.
As for me, I'm going to re-read the last few Perl Reviews and see how I can help out there. Why not do the same?
This is what I emailed them:

This post of mine promises to be the "Worst Node of the Day" and maybe of all my posts thus far. Nevertheless, I feel I have to say that if SysAdmin magazine has absorbed TPJ and now plans to eliminate it according to the message that cLive ;-) posted today, then we need someone to step forward and start The Perl Journal anew. I'm almost always in agreement with you, dws, but I think I have to disagree with your approach here. If we're not going to start our own TPJ and theperljournal.com or ientry.com wants to try, then maybe we should encourage them. Maybe we should offer to write articles for them, or offer to give constructive comments on their articles. Having said that, though, I'm not sure that I totally agree with my points as much as I'd like to agree with them. Basically, I would like TPJ to make a come back. These people at theperljournal.com certainly are off to a rough start and could have done better to have solicited articles from the Perl Monks site in advance of their first issue. So, I don't know. What does everyone else think--and please don't say what you think strictly by down voting my node. Is there a way that TPJ can be revived without these theperljournal.com people, or are they as good a bet as any? -Spenser

Have you looked at The Perl Review. If the community wants to build an alternative Perl magazine then that's where we should be concentrating out efforts.

Man, what a bad site. Perl is inconsistantly capitalized. None of the links mentioned in the text are live. There are stray formatting tags in the body. All this on top of the fact that it is advocating some of the worst code on the planet.

I agree very bad site... I saw it a few months ago and thought what a shame.
As for the links, at the bottom of the page are some poorly formatted and possibly broken links.

iEntry.com (the owner of the domain) is a "opt in" "webmaster resource" "we're not spam, really!!" house. Note all the quotes, I've been trying to get off a list I was subscribed to (somehow) for a while- I just filter everything from thier domain into the trash now, and they've been adding me to more and more lists over time.
The whois record says the domain was created on 2001-05-23, so I don't think they were profiteering on the demise of TPJ.
Somehow, I doubt they will respond to reason/and or appeals to their higher mind, though I applaud folks for trying.
And wouldn't that be "theperljournal ne TPJ?

I note the issue date is "04/09/02". Either this is a US "publication", and thankfully it died back in April, or it is UK publication, and they are a few days ahead of themselves. In either case, anyone that calls themselves a programmer and writes dates in such an ambiguous format is beneath contempt. Didn't they learn anything frm Y2K?
Seriously, when one is outputting dates, to avoid confusion between the US format and the "rest of the world" format, one should spell out the month name. Make it April 9, 2002 - at least those not from the US cannot misinterpret the date. Likewise, 4 September 2002 is equally clear to both US and non-Us readers.
And it should go without saying to include the century - 2002; not "02". Some people never learn.

You make some rather large assumptions. How many programmers can actually write? Some of the worst english skills I have seen are from software engineers. Think about it? How many times have you complained about terrible documentation? Chances are that a programmer wrote it. After all would you rather write code or documentation? ;-)
With this in mind, you are most likely reading a writer who knows some programming. My friend writes for several WEB magazines and yet she would not call herself a talented web programmer/designer. Yet she is a good writer!
The date issue is superfluous as it is perfectly correct to write it in that fashion on paper. Y2K issues only matter on computer data.
Besides the rest of the world needs to keep in mind the US is the world! :PPPPPPPPPPPPP

Isn't that site name violating a trademark or something? Not that they wouldn't just resurface elsewhere, but when people like the Pragmatic Programmers recommend subscribing to The Perl Journal in their (self-titled) book, there seems to be an awful lot of room for confusion. | [reply] |

Wow guys, instead of simply laughing at them; why not correct their mistakes? If they are serious about trying to create something for the Perl community, they will probably listen.
Who knows they might even ask you to write something ;-)

I am sure that I'm not the only one who sent the author/editor an email about the link to Matt's Script Archive and the use of Matt's FormMail.pl script as the basis for an article.
