It also depends upon what application you are working. For instance, normalization is wonderful and important in OLTP, but it loses its importance in Data Warehouses, where the extra joining required to find related data is frequently too expensive. But, that said, I kind of agree with your CTO, I have seen that same general trend; but its not *that* strong. "That that is, is... for what is that but that? and is but is?"
