I dont like the idea of giving monks vegetable names either.
Sometimes I feel slightly embarrassed when having to deal with people whose family names sound like vegetables - uttering them just feels so strange. It might even sound humiliating in some situations. This FAQ entry about pumpkins shows me though how culture sneakes them in anyway...
