Translation of the Perlmonks levels ...

I was looking to the right of my perlmonk screen and it said "You have bla bla bla points until level 11 - Chaplain" and I though : " Uh ? What's a Chaplain ? I think it's great to be an Hermit ! I don't want to be a Chaplain, I don't event know what a Chaplain is ! What about a Curate ? "

So I fired up the dictionaries and checked for the meanings in my my own language .
For all you francophones out there (you know who you are ;) here's what it means !

Now I have to admit that I'm not the religious type and that the difference between a Canon and a Deacon is not any clearer in French than it is in English ... But for some levels (like Chaplain) it makes sense, and some other are just plain funny ...!

The clerical terms are not really bijective as some could be translated different ways but i chose the one that felt logical (or was translated that way in most of the dictionaries)...

• Friar => Broeder
• Vicar => Pastoor
• Prior => Prior (what you got is the translation of the adverb prior, not the noun)

Im inlcined to put these lists into play on the site, and set up a user setting to control what language you would like your level to be shown in. Is anybody up to doing a translation to Klingon? Im fairly sure that would be one of the more popular choices. :-) (Right after outback-aussie :-)

If you let people just set level names instead, then people can cut'n'paste Klingon names or Elfish names when someone publishes such a list (and w/o admin intervention) as well as mix'n'match or whatever.

hm, i'd rather prefer a setting that would allow me to display a page in my language of choice if it existed... so if I (or any other monk? =)) ever got around to translate some of the monastery docs into - say - German, I would see them in German language as long as my setting says that I wanted it like that...

Also note that "Monsignor" has no Icelandic translation/equivalent I'm aware of at all (so I've left it intact), and that I'm not aware of a specific Icelandic translation of "chancellor" in the ecclesiastical sense (hence the generic "kanslari").

I am not sure for some items, because many titles do not become clear to me even translated to native language...
Russian church has similar titles; I wonder what will do far-east people, whose traditions is far different?
