Unfortunately, growers are breeding pumpkins these days for carving and size, not taste. Fortunately, there's been a backlash (see Tuesday's NYT article which requires a login). So yeah, go taste! I speak as someone who makes an excellent pumpkin pie and pumpkin soup (I chose "Functionality" for my vote).
