Parallel::Runner and Amazon SQS Issue

stonecolddevin has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

I have this problem. I need to take 70G~ of JSON data from a MySQL database and migrate it over to S3. To do so, I am attempting to fork off $n workers using Parallel::Runner, grab $n (most likely 5k at a time) records from the database in staggered fashion (such that child 1 grabs 1-5000, child 2 grabs 5001-10000, and so on.), and enqueues the data to SQS. This all runs fine except when I make the call to SQS.

As you can see here, without the SQS call, the script runs swimmingly (as best as I can tell, at least):

When I add the SQS call however, each child processes the same item. It's almost like SQS is taking too long and the next child is created before the $last_seen variable is updated.

      It would seem to me that I'd want to update in the parallel process, otherwise it only gets updated for however many children there are, not for however many items in the dataset there are.

        It seems to me, you are looking for shared variable and lock facility for ipc processes. If threads::shared is what you are looking for, please see example of zentra and example of BrowserUK and documents for thread.

        It is pity of me not well educated myself for threads, to say something... I hope it helps you.

    Seeing as how this is probably a one-shot, I might just select data in the main loop, and feed it to Amazon in parallel processes. It shouldn't take ALL that long to select 70G of data. The bottleneck, I would think, would be the Amazon request. Something like:
    while ( my $records = fetch_next_5000_records_from_sth() ) { $runner->run( ..feed records to Amazon... ); )

    Update: And it looks like you really only feed one record at a time to the web service, so it might as well be:

    while ( my $record = $sth->fetch() ) { $runner->run(... feed record to service ...); }

    Not taking the time to analyze this thing too closely ... what you need to do is to fork-off a controlled number of worker threads, each one of which (by means of a properly-locked, shared variable) fetches “the next chunk” of data and sends it.   All of the threads do this until they discover that there are no more chunks to send, at which time they all terminate.   When all of the children terminate, the parent process ends.

    The two control-parameters to this process will be ... how many children do you want to fork, and how many rows of data do you want each of them to send at one time?

    Notice that the children, once spawned, are persistent until the entire job is done.   At the top of the loop, they must lock the shared variable, test its value, and then either “unlock and exit” if the job is done, or “increment the value and unlock” if it is not.   They retrieve, package, and send their chunk, then loop back to do it again.   (There are several ways to do it, many packages to choose from, etc.   Only the concept is what I’m driving at here...)   Taken together, it is fairly unpredictable which one of the threads will send the “next” chunk, but, working together as a team for however long it takes, they will get the job done.

      What do you recommend for locked, shared variables? This is something about IPC I haven't gotten into. Another idea I had was getting the number of database records needed to be processed (one way or another, not concerned about efficiency until I get something working), divide them by the number of workers, get the offsets, and THEN fire up the children.

      I think your method is a bit more solid though, so I'll look into that.
