How should I change the format to save the strings in the format matlab needs them...? As far as I can tell, you shouldn't need to change the format! The only problem you had was that the with the file in text mode, some numbers produced byte values of 13d/0x0d, which windows text mode then duly added a 10d/0x0a byte. Hence, you were getting an extra byte. With binmode, the extra character won't be added, and (I assume) the modules existing format will then work. Otherwise, contact the modules author.
