I'm also for sub-classing as others have suggested.
And BTW getting DBH from things like that is needed so that you can set the DBI internals such as $DBH->{AutoCommit} = 0 ... or other things that specific db wrapper isn't taking care of. Have you tried freelancing? Check out Scriptlance - I work there.
