Non-breaking spaces in perlmonks nav bar

by japh (Friar)
on Dec 21, 2001 at 05:36 UTC ( [id://133688]=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

Different browser widths break up the perlmonks top navigation bar phrases differently. I often see 'Seekers of Perl' and then 'Wisdom' on the next line posing as a separate section. Changing the intraphrase spaces to   non-breaking spaces would aid navigation.

Replies are listed 'Best First'.

Since you've brought up the navigation bar, can we add the Super Search to the top?  I use it more than any other link and I think there are many newbie's like myself that should be encouraged to do likewise.

What I would really like to see is the section titles sorted alphabetically. When I look for Snippets my eyes hover between Reviews and Tutorials and it takes me several moments to shift them up to the line above.

Same thing with Obfuscation between Meditation and Perl Monks Discussion, except the other way around. I still haven't become used to the order (or lack of).

I think that it would be better to do three lines, three groups of links and insert the
's. I had the same problem w/ my own website and solved it that way.
    -- package Lizard::King; sub can { do { 'anything'} };

Why is having a link wrap a bad thing? I like this form of efficient use of my screen. Currently, "The Monastery Gates" has a line break in it, and I don't mind. Maybe it should be an option, though...

    2;0 juerd@ouranos:~$ perl -e'undef christmas' Segmentation fault 2;139 juerd@ouranos:~$

Beyond line breaks within links, it's generally a Bad Thing in terms of simple UI rules: "thou shalt be consistent."

If the position of the navigational links changes depending on the width of your browser window, it greatly slows down one's ability to navigate the site. It requires you actually read/skim through the links every time you want to go use them (well, every time your browser window changes width, which for me (and many other developers with lots of windows open) is often), rather than being able to move your mouse to a consistent location within the browser window, knowing that the link to section X is always *right there*
The sections are named somewhat arcanely as it is. A newcomer browsing the site (ok, it was me last year and now again as i reacquaint myself) might get confused and assume "Seekers of Perl" is a download zone, with a vague "Wisdom" wrapped on the next line.
Let them think it is. As always, reading is important. Not reading will cause confusion.
That's with code, documentation... and PerlMonks.

This is my 7th day on PerlMonks now, but as a newcomer, I have no trouble at all navigating the site. (It was a bit hard when I first visited this site, because I didn't see the nodelets (dual headed system, with a browser window somewhere in the middle) :)

Maybe the word "Perl" should be removed from the navigation bar (not in "Perl Monks Discussion", of course), 'cause the whole site is about Perl. ('Cool Uses', 'Seekers of Wisdom', 'News')...
'Monastery Gates' would be better too, imho - or be consistent and have 'The Snippets', 'The Cool Uses for Perl', etcetera :)

(OT) Newest Nodes link in PM navbar
by jlf (Scribe) on Dec 21, 2001 at 23:06 UTC
I hope it's not too offtopic, but it would be great if the "Newest Nodes" link were more bookmark-friendly. For example, right now the link points to http://www.perlmonks.org/index.pl?node_id=3628&lastnode_id=3333 and if I bookmark the link it will still point to that set of nodes when I click it next week. Would it be possible for the navbar link to point a page that redirects to the current newest nodes?

You can probably just edit the bookmark and remove the lastnode_id part et voilà! No programming involved, no bandwith wasted, it works.

If you are getting the same nodes listed after a week, then you have a caching problem, probably in a proxy. Try forcing a refresh. (The link you quoted works fine and will produces the latest newest nodes each time you visit it. If you aren't getting the latest newest nodes then someone is ignoring proper caching and serving you an old copy.)

              - tye (but my friends call me "Tye")
You can also add it in your personal nodelet.
