Let's add a Golf category

Golf is a growing diversion in the Perl community. There is a perl golf list with dozens of subscribers, including many Monks, and the TPR competition draws more than a hundred contestants each month. As a means of including this very enthusiastic group into our community, I propose that we create a new Golf category on our site.

A web log structure is ideal for golfing enthusiasts. People enjoy watching the evolution of golf programs as people post improvements and we would have a permanent record of useful golf techniques without the barrier of dealing with a mailing list.

Golf programs currently don't fit easily into any current category. They are short, but are not really pedagogical snippets. They are often obfucated, but obfuscation and golf are differing goals. They are usually complete programs, but would be out of place in the catacombs. Golf postings are often placed in Meditations (for their koan-like quality), but Meditations are more for general discussion of Perl programming ang programming in general and usually contain little code. Golf needs a category.

Some might be worried about increasing the number of categories. I would counter that golf is short and easily understood by the community. If adding a new category is really untenable, one could create a single category of snippets and golf, or meditations and golf, etc. Or one could retire Craft into the Catacombs. But I think golf would work best as a standalone category.

Just because you can put anything in a meditation, doesn't mean you should.

I'm not a huge fan of Golf, but I can certainly appreciate the value of giving it it's own section.

If you come the site in the mood to answer questions, you can go straight to the SOPW; if you are interested in challenging your brain, you can go straight to Obfuscations; Poetry, Code Catacombs, ... all have their purposes for when people are in the mood to read/do something in particular. Golf is a big enough part of the perl community that it seems to deserve it's own little piece of perlmonks realestate where Golf-ites can gatherto callenge others, or answer challenged. ...If for no other reason then so people who AREN'T interested in golf don't have to wade trough Golf postings while looking for interesting stuff to read.

A reply falls below the community's threshold of quality. You may see it by logging in.

What in the world is Perlgolf??
Perl Golf is an extension of the idea of the one-liner Perl program. It is a game in which the goal is to accomplish, in the fewest number of (key)strokes, a specified task. Good solutions usually require a good, terse, algorithm coupled with fiendishly clever Perl constructs.
